"Any idea when you're chatting with the Haim sisters?" a message arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There's just a key snag: The sender also desires to be the Haims' newest recruit. What's more, we are far from alone. A host of famous supporters have also coveted the honor.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are multi-time Grammy hopefuls.

Like all the best groups, they're a tight-knit gang. Their videos frequently feature them striding in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such pure exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the biggest honor. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate people to make music."

"So everyone are welcome to be the honorary Haim sister."

Historic Milestone

The trio are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an major tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major step," says Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the female artists that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Humour

The album came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that unique in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The words detail departures and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to consciously practice ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That recent toughness called for a fresh approach – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The band's honesty shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their romantic horror stories.

A former partner left Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Legacy

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an international fan base.

Yet the band will forever be their top priority.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was four," says Alana. "There is no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
