Paris Saint-Germain Edges Olympique de Marseille via Spot-Kicks to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now claimed the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate times.

The Parisian giants needed a stoppage-time leveler followed by a successful spot-kick decider to get past their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a fourth straight French Super Cup title.

The European champions appeared to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the match featuring the French league winners and the French Cup winners after the French winger found the scoring in the opening stages.

Yet, Marseille struck two times late to take a shock lead. First, the English forward converted from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of fortune, the Portuguese striker snatched a vital equaliser in the final moments to send the contest into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then emerged as the hero, saving decisive attempts from O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a 4-1 penalty victory.

Now 14-time champions Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the last thirteen years.
