Uche Fuels Dominant Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever continental adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are learning very quickly. Missing star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding result that virtually secures them a spot in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their upcoming match against Finland's KuPS should be enough to secure straight passage to the last 16, especially following a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Moment
This occasion provided a chance for some of Palace's fringe talent to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a clinical finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne team that had finished their league season proved outmatched against a largely second-string Palace lineup. The Londoners were further weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close minutes later, fizzing a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man did not have wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring his first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then missed a glaring chance, indicating there is still scope for development in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise positive night for the traveling side.
